The academic relationship between Germany and East Africa has brought in opportunities for students, young scientists and professionals pursue their career through scholarship grants, exchange programmes and collaborations between universities.

German has been taught at Kenyan secondary schools since January 1988, with 58 such schools now offering it as a subject. The regional office of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Nairobi has been active there for more than 40 years. It promotes academic exchange between Kenya and Germany. The DAAD runs a large number of programmes, awarding scholarships to especially gifted Kenyan students that enable them to study in both Germany and Kenya. DAAD has also established several centres of excellence to promote future leaders in Africa. By establishing Centres of Excellence at leading African universities, the DAAD aims to create modern educational capacities. The improvements in the educational quality and the greater research capacity available at these world-class hubs will enable the next generation of leaders to acquire training in line with international standards.

To further strengthen the academic relationship between the two countries, the German Foreign Office and the Kenyan Ministry of Education signed a Joint Declaration of Intent on the establishment of the Eastern African-German University of Applied Sciences in Nairobi on February 9 2017. The project will help create a model of vocational-oriented academic training in close cooperation with industry, the aim being to boost employment among the young population. »»Eastern African-German University of Applied Sciences
